SEA TURTLE SANCTUARY AND PRESERVATION
We have teamed up and partnered with ECOBANA, a Sea Turtle Presrvation society, made up completely of dedicated volunteers, whose goal is to help these endangered creatures, who are rapidly losing the
battle of servival due to habibitat encroachment, natural and human preditors. We have contributed to the cause and continue to raise money for the cause to help this dedicated group to continue along in the great work they do.
Sea turtles, or marine turtles, are distributed in all of the planet’s oceans except for in the polar regions. There are just seven species of sea turtles alive today. The olive ridley (Lepidochelys
olivacea), the leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), the hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), the Pacific green (Chelonia mydas), the Kemps ridley (Lepidochelys kempii), the flatback (Natator depressus)
and the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta). All appear on the IUCN Redlist of threatened species as endangered. The leatherback and hawksbill turtles are sadly listed as being critically endangered.
Of these seven species of sea turtles, four of them are distributed in Mexican waters (olive ridley, hawksbill, leatherback & Pacific green) particularly along the ‘Costalegre’, the area of coastline
stretching 280 kms north to south (Barra de Navidad to the south to Playa Mismaloya, just south of Puerto Vallarta, to the north. The olive ridley is the most common species found in this region.
The Pacific green are the second-most abundant though these are found in far smaller numbers than the dominant olive ridleys.
